Case Study: Launching the Quran Pak Delivery System During COVID-19 (2019)

March 19, 2019 Case Studies

Background

In 2019, during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, when strict lockdowns were enforced across Pakistan, traditional retail operations came to a complete halt. I was working at Taj Company Pvt. Ltd., one of the country’s oldest and most respected publishers of the Holy Quran. As the retail business was severely affected, it became evident that the company needed to adapt quickly to survive.

Recognizing the spiritual need of people during this uncertain time—and the business urgency faced by the company—I initiated the idea of launching an online Quran delivery system.

The Challenge

  • Business Survival: Physical outlets were shut due to lockdowns, resulting in declining sales.
  • Spiritual Demand: People were turning toward religion during the pandemic, creating a growing demand for Quran copies at home.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Handling and shipping the Holy Quran required religious approvals and careful execution.
  • Public Backlash: Many people questioned the idea of commercial delivery of the Holy Quran, fearing disrespect or mishandling.

My Approach

1. Concept Development & Research

I first outlined a complete concept for delivering the Holy Quran safely and respectfully across Pakistan. It involved not only logistics but also religious validation.

2. Religious Endorsement

To address concerns, I consulted multiple Muftis and obtained formal Fatwas (religious rulings) that permitted the shipment of the Quran under strict respectful conditions. These endorsements became central in gaining public trust.

3. Partnerships with Couriers

I met with various courier companies, explaining the religious importance and sensitivity of the task. Special delivery protocols were discussed, such as handling with clean hands, no stacking with other parcels, and protective wrapping.

4. Platform Setup & Launch

Using the company’s existing web infrastructure, I helped develop and launch the Quran Delivery Section online. Customers could now order Qurans from their homes, with assurance of proper Islamic handling and packaging.

Results

  • 📦 Thousands of Qurans Delivered Nationwide
  • 🌐 Significant increase in online traffic and orders, becoming the company’s main revenue stream during lockdown
  • 🙏 Public Appreciation from people unable to visit mosques or bookstores
  • ⚖️ Successfully addressed backlash through transparency, religious fatwas, and educational content on respectful delivery

Key Takeaways

  • Innovation During Crisis: The initiative turned a crisis into an opportunity for business survival and community service.
  • Respectful Commercialization: With the right religious guidance and execution, sensitive products like the Quran can be distributed ethically.
  • Digital Transformation: This marked the company’s shift into digital operations, paving the way for long-term e-commerce success.

Final Thoughts

Launching the Quran Pak Delivery System was not just a business decision—it was a response to a spiritual need during a global crisis. Despite facing criticism and cultural sensitivity challenges, with the right intention, religious support, and operational planning, we were able to serve thousands across Pakistan and ensure the survival of a legacy Islamic publishing house during one of its most difficult times.
